Overview of the medicine
Oxycaine 0.4% Eye Drop is a topical ophthalmic anesthetic used to numb the surface of the eye for short medical procedures or examinations.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 drops instilled into the affected eye(s) as needed for the procedure. Repeat as necessary, but do not exceed recommended frequency.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for topical ophthalmic use, minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For topical ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch, instill the drops into the pouch, and gently close the eye. Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to the eye or any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Oxycaine stabilizes the neuronal membrane by inhibiting the ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of impulses, thereby effecting local anesthetic action.
Pharmacokinetics

Within 30 seconds
Excretion
Metabolites excreted primarily in urine.
Half life
Short, typically 10-20 minutes locally
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed into corneal and conjunctival tissue. Minimal systemic absorption.
Metabolism
Hydrolyzed by plasma esterases
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Oxycaine or other local anesthetics of the ester type.
- Known allergy to any component of the formulation.
- Prolonged use, especially self-administration, can lead to serious corneal damage.
Drug Interactions
None
No significant systemic drug interactions are expected due to minimal systemic absorption. Exercise caution with other topical eye medications.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose via topical ophthalmic route is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited absorption. Local overdose may cause increased irritation, burning, or stinging. If accidentally ingested, seek immediate medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. It is unknown if Oxycaine is excreted in human milk; use with caution during lactation.
