Description
Overview of the medicine
Oxyfast-005 Nasal Spray contains oxymetazoline hydrochloride, a topical decongestant. It is used to relieve nasal congestion caused by colds, allergies, and sinusitis by constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages, which reduces swelling and allows for easier breathing.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For adults and children 6 years and older: 2 or 3 sprays into each nostril every 10-12 hours. Do not exceed 2 doses in any 24-hour period. Do not use for more than 3 consecutive days.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but use with caution in elderly patients, especially those with underlying cardiovascular conditions.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is typically required due to minimal systemic absorption, but caution is advised in severe cases.
How to Take
For nasal use only. Clear the nasal passages before use. Tilt head slightly forward, insert nozzle into nostril, and spray while sniffing gently. Repeat for the other nostril. Wipe the nozzle clean after each use.
Mechanism of Action
Oxymetazoline is a direct-acting sympathomimetic amine. It acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist, causing vasoconstriction of the arterioles in the nasal mucosa. This reduces blood flow and swelling, thereby decreasing nasal congestion and improving air passage.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is typically within a few minutes (e.g., 5-10 minutes) after administration.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys if systemically absorbed, with some unchanged drug and metabolites.
Half life
If systemic absorption occurs, the plasma half-life can range from approximately 5 to 8 hours.
Absorption
Systemic absorption from the nasal mucosa is minimal. However, some absorption can occur, particularly with excessive use or in sensitive individuals.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism is expected with typical nasal administration. Any systemically absorbed drug may be metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline or any component of the formulation.
- Patients undergoing transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or other surgeries exposing the dura mater.
- Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma.
- Patients taking MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping them.
Drug Interactions
MAO Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Concurrent use may lead to a hypertensive crisis due to additive sympathomimetic effects.
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
May potentiate the pressor effect of oxymetazoline, leading to increased blood pressure.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose can lead to significant systemic absorption, potentially causing hypertension, bradycardia, dizziness, drowsiness, and central nervous system depression, especially in children. Treatment is supportive, focusing on managing symptoms.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and under medical supervision. It is unknown if oxymetazoline is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.

Clinical Trials
Oxymetazoline has been extensively studied in clinical trials for its efficacy and safety as a nasal decongestant. Studies have demonstrated its rapid onset and sustained duration of action in reducing nasal congestion.
Lab Monitoring
- No specific laboratory monitoring is generally required for oxymetazoline nasal spray due to its local action and minimal systemic absorption.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of limiting use to 3 days to prevent rebound congestion.
- Advise patients on proper administration technique to maximize efficacy and minimize side effects.
- Inquire about concurrent use of MAOIs or TCAs to avoid drug interactions.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration of use (maximum 3 days) to avoid rebound congestion.
- If symptoms do not improve after 3 days, consult a doctor.
- Avoid sharing the nasal spray to prevent the spread of infection.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Oxyfast-005 Nasal Spray is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery, as systemic side effects are rare with proper use. However, if you experience dizziness, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hydration by drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoid exposure to irritants that may worsen nasal congestion (e.g., smoke, strong odors).
