Description
Overview of the medicine
Ozink 10 mg Syrup is a zinc supplement used to treat and prevent zinc deficiency, particularly in children for the management of acute diarrhea and to boost immune function.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For zinc deficiency: 10-20 mg elemental zinc once daily. The dose and duration depend on the severity of the deficiency.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, unless there are specific underlying conditions or deficiencies.
Children
For acute diarrhea (WHO guidelines): Children >6 months: 20 mg elemental zinc (10 mL syrup) once daily for 10-14 days. Children <6 months: 10 mg elemental zinc (5 mL syrup) once daily for 10-14 days. For zinc deficiency: 5-10 mg elemental zinc once daily.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment and monitor zinc levels.
How to Take
Ozink 10 mg Syrup should be taken orally, preferably with meals to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Use the provided measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing. Shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous enzymatic processes, immune system function, DNA synthesis, and wound healing. In acute diarrhea, zinc helps reduce the duration and severity of the episode, improves water and electrolyte absorption, and supports gut mucosal regeneration and immune response.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects for acute conditions (e.g., diarrhea) can be observed within days; for deficiency correction, it may take weeks.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via feces (about 90%), with a small amount excreted renally and through sweat.
Half life
The biological half-life of zinc in the body is estimated to be around 125 days, reflecting its storage and utilization.
Absorption
Approximately 20-30% of ingested zinc is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, influenced by dietary factors.
Metabolism
Zinc is not metabolized in the liver; it is absorbed and incorporated into various proteins and enzymes throughout the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to zinc or any component of the syrup.
- Patients with severe kidney disease should use with caution.
Drug Interactions
Penicillamine
Zinc can reduce the absorption of penicillamine, a chelating agent. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Iron supplements
High doses of iron can interfere with zinc absorption. Separate administration by several hours.
Tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., Doxycycline)
Zinc can reduce the absorption of tetracyclines. Take zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after tetracyclines.
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., Ciprofloxacin)
Zinc can reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolones. Take zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after fluoroquinolones.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of acute zinc overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and lethargy. Chronic high-dose zinc intake can lead to copper deficiency. Treatment is supportive; in severe cases, chelation therapy may be considered under medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Zinc is an essential nutrient during pregnancy and lactation. Ozink 10 mg Syrup can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but doses should not exceed the recommended daily allowance unless specifically advised by a doctor.
