Description
Overview of the medicine
Pedicef DS is an antibiotic belonging to the third-generation cephalosporin class, used to treat various bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for Pedicef DS (pediatric formulation). For adult cefixime, 200-400 mg daily in single or two divided doses.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be considered in elderly patients with significant renal impairment. Not applicable for Pedicef DS.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance < 60 ml/min, total daily dose should be reduced.
How to Take
For oral administration. The dry syrup should be reconstituted with boiled and cooled water as directed by the pharmacist, then shaken well before each use. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of the bacteria.

Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion (about 50% unchanged in urine) and biliary excretion.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed; food has minimal effect on absorption.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase cefixime Cmax and AUC.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels have been reported with concomitant cefixime.
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May increase prothrombin time; monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store dry powder at room temperature, below 30°C. Store reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C). Do not freeze.
Overdose
No specific antidote. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. Gastric lavage may be indicated.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in lactating mothers.
