Description
Overview of the medicine
Prentox 6 mg Tablet contains Prednisolone, a synthetic corticosteroid used to treat a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions by suppressing the immune system and reducing inflammation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage varies widely depending on the condition being treated and patient response. Typically ranges from 5 mg to 60 mg daily, given as a single dose or divided doses. For Prentox 6 mg, a common starting dose might be 6-30 mg daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised due to increased risk of side effects. Lower effective doses should be considered.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is generally needed for renal impairment, but clinical monitoring is recommended.
How to Take
Take Prentox 6 mg Tablet orally, preferably with food or milk to minimize gastric irritation. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Prednisolone acts by binding to specific glucocorticoid receptors within target cells, inhibiting the release of various inflammatory mediators (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes) and suppressing immune responses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anti-inflammatory effects typically begin within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine as inactive metabolites and, to a lesser extent, as unchanged drug.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 2-4 hours, but the biological half-life (duration of action) is 18-36 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations usually occur within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites, including conjugation with sulfates and glucuronides.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Systemic fungal infections
- •Hypersensitivity to prednisolone or any components of the tablet
- •Live virus vaccines during high-dose corticosteroid therapy
Drug Interactions
Oral contraceptives
May increase prednisolone levels.
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
Increased risk of hypokalemia (low potassium levels).
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
Altered anticoagulant effect; close monitoring of INR is required.
Phenytoin, Phenobarbital, Rifampicin
May decrease prednisolone levels due to increased hepatic metabolism.
NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs)
Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding.
Antidiabetic agents (e.g., Insulin, Metformin)
Corticosteroids can increase blood glucose levels, potentially requiring adjustment of antidiabetic medication.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare. Symptoms may include fluid retention, hypertension, and hyperglycemia. Management is symptomatic and supportive. No specific antidote is available. Chronic overdose can lead to severe adverse effects (e.g., Cushing's syndrome, adrenal suppression).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Prednisolone is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor before use.
