Description
Overview of the medicine
AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) formulation is a specific combination of vitamins and minerals proven to reduce the risk of progression of moderate to advanced Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The AREDS 2 formula, specifically, does not contain beta-carotene, replacing it with lutein and zeaxanthin.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically, 2 softgels or capsules daily, one in the morning and one in the evening, with food.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Consult a doctor for severe renal impairment due to zinc content, although generally safe for mild to moderate impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with food to enhance absorption and minimize gastrointestinal upset. It is recommended to take at regular intervals each day.
Mechanism of Action
The vitamins (C and E) and minerals (zinc, copper) in AREDS formula act as antioxidants, protecting the macula from oxidative stress and damage, which is believed to contribute to AMD progression. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids that accumulate in the macula, forming macular pigment which filters blue light and has antioxidant properties.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical benefits observed after continuous use over several years.
Excretion
Excreted via urine and feces.
Half life
Variable for individual components.
Absorption
Vitamins and minerals are absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Lutein and zeaxanthin are absorbed and preferentially deposited in the macula.
Metabolism
Metabolism typical for individual vitamins and minerals.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
High doses of Vitamin E may theoretically increase the risk of bleeding.
Calcium supplements
High calcium intake may reduce zinc absorption.
Tetracycline/Quinolone antibiotics
High doses of zinc can interfere with the absorption of these antibiotics. Take AREDS at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these antibiotics.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F), away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, metallic taste (from zinc), and fatigue. Consult a medical professional immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or lactation. While individual components are generally safe, high doses in specific combinations require medical advice.
