Description
Overview of the medicine
Indomethacin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis. It is also used to treat gout attacks and certain types of headaches.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 25 mg to 50 mg, 2-3 times daily, not exceeding 200 mg/day.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required due to increased sensitivity and risk of adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Adjust dosage based on creatinine clearance; use with caution.
How to Take
Take orally with food, milk, or antacids to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow capsules whole.
Mechanism of Action
Indomethacin works by inhibiting the production of certain natural substances in your body that cause inflammation. It blocks the cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins, leading to reduced pain, swelling, and fever.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes for pain relief, 1-2 hours for anti-inflammatory.
Excretion
Mainly via urine (60%) and feces (33%).
Half life
4.5 to 6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the GI tract.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver by O-demethylation and N-deacylation.
