Protebon 500 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the infection type and severity.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required unless renal function is significantly impaired. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, reduce dose to 250 mg once daily or extend dosing interval. For hemodialysis patients, 250 mg after dialysis.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet. It is important to complete the full course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Protemaxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.

Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine, with some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 7-10 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.

Minimally metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to protemaxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
- •History of tendon disorders related to quinolone administration.
- •Children and adolescents below 18 years of age due to risk of cartilage damage.
- •Patients with epilepsy or other seizure disorders.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effects of warfarin, requiring INR monitoring.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of theophylline, leading to toxicity. Monitor theophylline levels.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture when co-administered.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, iron preparations, sucralfate, zinc supplements
May reduce absorption of protemaxacin. Administer protemaxacin 2 hours before or 6 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion is recent. Monitor ECG due to potential for QT prolongation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation unless clearly necessary, as animal studies show potential effects on cartilage development. Consult a doctor to weigh benefits against risks.
