Description
Overview of the medicine
Protovir-25-mg-tablet is an antiviral medication used to treat specific viral infections. It works by inhibiting key enzymes necessary for viral replication, thus reducing the viral load in the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
25 mg orally twice daily for 5-7 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless significant renal impairment is present. Monitor for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment may be necessary for severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min). Consult product information.
How to Take
Take Protovir-25-mg-tablet orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Protovir selectively inhibits the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase enzyme, preventing the transcription and replication of viral genetic material. This leads to a significant reduction in viral proliferation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 24-48 hours
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally (approximately 70% as metabolites, 30% unchanged drug) and some via feces.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver via CYP450 enzymes (e.g., CYP3A4) to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Protovir or any component of the formulation
- •Severe hepatic impairment
Drug Interactions
Phenytoin
May decrease Protovir plasma concentrations due to enzyme induction.
Ritonavir
May increase Protovir plasma concentrations due to CYP inhibition, requiring dose adjustment.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Hemodialysis is not effective.
