Description
Overview of the medicine
Quintor contains Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-750 mg orally twice daily, depending on the infection severity and type.
Elderly
Dose adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage is required, e.g., 250-500 mg every 18-24 hours for severe impairment.
How to Take
May be taken with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices alone. Take two hours before or six hours after iron, zinc, antacids, or sucralfate.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion (approximately 50-70% as unchanged drug) and some biliary excretion.
Half life
About 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, bioavailability is about 70-80%.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism to less active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- Concomitant use with Tizanidine
Drug Interactions
Caffeine
Reduced caffeine clearance.
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect.
Tizanidine
Increased Tizanidine plasma concentrations, leading to hypotension and somnolence.
Theophylline
Increased theophylline plasma concentrations, leading to toxicity.
Antacids (containing Mg/Al), Iron, Zinc, Sucralfate
Decreased absorption of ciprofloxacin. Separate administration by several hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include reversible renal toxicity. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care, including gastric lavage and adequate hydration. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may remove a small amount of ciprofloxacin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during lactation as it is excreted in breast milk and may cause adverse effects in the infant.
