Description
Overview of the medicine
Recicof Linctus 125 mg Syrup is a combination medication used to relieve symptoms of the common cold, allergies, and flu. It helps to alleviate cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mL (2 teaspoonfuls) 3-4 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function and overall health. Start with lower doses.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose reduction may be necessary due to renal excretion of some components.
How to Take
Orally. Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the dose with a measuring spoon or cup.
Mechanism of Action
Dextromethorphan acts as a cough suppressant by elevating the cough threshold in the medulla. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that constricts blood vessels in the nasal passages. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that blocks histamine H1 receptors, reducing allergic symptoms like sneezing and runny nose. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that thins bronchial secretions, making it easier to clear mucus.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30-60 minutes
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion (urine).
Half life
Dextromethorphan: 2-4 hours (to 11 hours in poor metabolizers); Phenylephrine: 2-3 hours; Chlorpheniramine: 12-43 hours; Guaifenesin: 1 hour
Absorption
Well absorbed orally. Dextromethorphan undergoes rapid and extensive hepatic first-pass metabolism. Phenylephrine has low oral bioavailability due to extensive first-pass metabolism. Chlorpheniramine is readily absorbed from the GI tract. Guaifenesin is rapidly absorbed.
Metabolism
Extensive hepatic metabolism, primarily via CYP2D6 for Dextromethorphan, MAO for Phenylephrine, and CYP enzymes for Chlorpheniramine. Guaifenesin is metabolized by oxidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the syrup
- •Patients taking MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping them
- •Severe hypertension or coronary artery disease
- •Narrow-angle glaucoma
- •Urinary retention
Drug Interactions
MAO Inhibitors
Concurrent use may lead to hypertensive crisis (due to phenylephrine) or serotonergic syndrome (due to dextromethorphan).
Antihypertensives
Phenylephrine may reduce the effect of antihypertensive medications.
Other Sympathomimetics
Increased risk of cardiovascular effects.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
May enhance CNS depression due to chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, hypertension, hallucinations, and CNS depression. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal, and monitoring vital signs.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the benefit outweighs the risk. Consult a doctor. Not recommended during breastfeeding as components may pass into breast milk.
