Description
Overview of the medicine
Reflacid 500 mg Suspension is a combination medicine used to treat acidity, heartburn, and stomach ulcers. It contains Magaldrate, an antacid that neutralizes stomach acid, and Simethicone, an antiflatulent that reduces gas and bloating.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 mL (2-4 teaspoonfuls) four times daily, 20 minutes to 1 hour after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, but caution in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Avoid high doses and prolonged use due to potential accumulation of magnesium and aluminum.
How to Take
Shake well before use. Take orally, preferably after meals and at bedtime. Do not exceed recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Magaldrate reacts with gastric acid to form a neutral salt, reducing acidity. Simethicone works by reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, allowing them to coalesce and be expelled more easily.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 5-15 minutes (for antacid effect)
Excretion
Excreted in feces (Magaldrate as insoluble salts); Simethicone is excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Not applicable for Magaldrate (minimally absorbed); Simethicone is not absorbed.
Absorption
Magaldrate is minimally absorbed systemically. Simethicone is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized systemically (Magaldrate); Simethicone is not metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Magaldrate, Simethicone, or any component of the formulation.
- Severe renal impairment (due to risk of magnesium and aluminum accumulation).
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May decrease absorption of Digoxin.
Iron preparations
May reduce iron absorption.
Tetracyclines/Fluoroquinolones
Antacids can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. In severe cases, especially with renal impairment, magnesium and aluminum toxicity may occur. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation, but consult a doctor before use, especially for prolonged periods or high doses.
