Description
Overview of the medicine
Rehydril is an oral rehydration salt (ORS) solution used to prevent and treat dehydration caused by diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating. It replenishes lost fluids and electrolytes, helping to restore the body's fluid balance.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
As per requirement, usually 250-500 ml after each loose stool or episode of vomiting. Continue as long as dehydration persists.
Elderly
Same as adults, with careful monitoring.
Renal_impairment
Caution in severe renal impairment due to electrolyte imbalances. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Dissolve the contents of one sachet in 200 ml of boiled and cooled water. Stir well and drink slowly. Do not add sugar or boil the solution after mixing.
Mechanism of Action
Oral Rehydration Salts work on the principle of co-transport of glucose and sodium in the small intestine. Glucose helps sodium to be absorbed, and water follows the sodium, thus facilitating rehydration. The electrolytes replace those lost during dehydration.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes to an hour for fluid and electrolyte balance restoration.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion of excess electrolytes and water.
Half life
Not applicable in the conventional sense; components are utilized/excreted continuously.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Glucose is metabolized; electrolytes are not metabolized but are distributed and excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluid therapy
- Intestinal obstruction
- Paralytic ileus
- Perforation of the gut
- Uncontrolled vomiting making oral administration impossible
Drug Interactions
Electrolyte-altering drugs
Caution should be exercised with drugs affecting electrolyte balance, such as certain diuretics or ACE inhibitors.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with proper preparation and administration. Excessive intake might lead to hypernatremia (high sodium levels) or hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), especially in individuals with impaired renal function. Management involves discontinuing ORS and correcting electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Considered safe during pregnancy and lactation. It is essential to maintain hydration in pregnant and lactating women.

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials since the 1970s have established the efficacy and safety of ORS for treating dehydration. Specific brand trials might be limited but generally align with WHO guidelines.
Lab Monitoring
- Generally not required for routine use. In severe dehydration or compromised renal function, monitor serum electrolytes (sodium, potassium) and renal function tests.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper preparation and administration to patients.
- Advise seeking immediate medical attention for signs of severe dehydration or if symptoms do not improve.
- ORS is the first-line treatment for mild to moderate dehydration.
Patient Guidelines
- Always use boiled and cooled water for preparation.
- Do not add sugar or other ingredients.
- Consume within 12 hours if kept at room temperature, or 24 hours if refrigerated.
- Do not boil the solution once mixed.
- If vomiting occurs, wait 5-10 minutes and then continue giving ORS slowly.
Missed Dose Advice
As ORS is consumed as needed, there is no 'missed dose' in the traditional sense. Continue to take it as symptoms of dehydration persist.
Driving Precautions
Rehydril is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Continue normal feeding as tolerated during diarrhea.
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent further infections.
- Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or persist.
