Description
Overview of the medicine
Relaxen (Bromazepam) is a benzodiazepine derivative with anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant properties. It is primarily used to manage anxiety and tension.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical oral dose for anxiety is 3-18 mg daily, in divided doses. For severe cases, up to 30 mg daily.
Elderly
Lower doses are recommended, typically half of the adult dose, starting with 1.5 mg daily in divided doses, due to increased sensitivity and slower metabolism.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction may be necessary in patients with severe renal impairment. Careful monitoring is advised.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Bromazepam enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors, leading to central nervous system depression, which produces its anxiolytic, sedative, and muscle relaxant effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anxiolytic effects typically within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 10-20 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached in 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes (mainly CYP3A4) to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bromazepam or other benzodiazepines
- Myasthenia gravis
- Severe respiratory insufficiency
- Sleep apnea syndrome
- Severe hepatic insufficiency

Additive CNS depressant effects.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include somnolence, confusion, lethargy, ataxia, dysarthria, and hypotension. Severe cases may lead to coma and respiratory depression. Management involves supportive care and gastric decontamination. Flumazenil may be used in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, due to potential risk of congenital malformations. Avoid during lactation as bromazepam passes into breast milk.
