Overview of the medicine
Relaxen 5 mg Tablet contains Diazepam, a benzodiazepine, primarily used for anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, and seizures. It acts on the central nervous system to produce a calming effect.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Anxiety: 2-10 mg, 2-4 times daily. Insomnia: 5-15 mg at bedtime. Muscle spasm: 2-10 mg, 3-4 times daily. Acute alcohol withdrawal: 10 mg 3-4 times during the first 24 hours, then 5 mg 3-4 times daily as needed.
Elderly
Initially 2-2.5 mg, once or twice daily, gradually increasing if needed.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for mild to moderate impairment, but caution advised. Use lowest effective dose.
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Diazepam enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor, leading to sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant effects.

Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Opioids
Increased risk of profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death.
Alcohol and other CNS depressants
Enhanced sedative effects.
CYP3A4/2C19 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine)
May decrease diazepam plasma levels.
CYP3A4/2C19 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, fluvoxamine)
May increase diazepam plasma levels.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include somnolence, confusion, diminished reflexes, coma, and respiratory depression. Treatment involves supportive care, gastric lavage, and flumazenil (benzodiazepine antagonist) if severe.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category D. Avoid during pregnancy, especially first trimester, due to risk of congenital malformations and neonatal withdrawal symptoms. Excreted in breast milk, avoid during lactation.
