Description
Overview of the medicine
Relitch (Esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
20 mg or 40 mg once daily, depending on indication. For GERD: 20-40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment; use with caution.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed.
How to Take
Take orally, at least one hour before a meal. Swallow the capsule/tablet whole; do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Esomeprazole selectively inhibits the H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump) in the secretory canaliculi of the gastric parietal cells, thereby blocking the final step of acid production.

Onset
Within 1 hour.
Excretion
Approximately 80% via urine and 20% via feces.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed, peak plasma concentrations occur within 1-2 hours. Bioavailability is approximately 64% (40 mg single dose) and 89% (repeated dose).
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or any components of the formulation, or to other substituted benzimidazoles.
- Concomitant use with nelfinavir.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased INR and prothrombin time, monitor for bleeding.
Clopidogrel
May reduce the antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel.
Methotrexate
Increased plasma concentrations of methotrexate, especially with high-dose use.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Limited experience with overdose. Symptoms are generally mild and reversible. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Excreted into breast milk, caution advised during lactation.
