Description
Overview of the medicine
Renabec-FG is a comprehensive nutritional supplement formulated with essential vitamins and minerals including iron, folic acid, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, and zinc. It is used to prevent and treat various nutritional deficiencies.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 capsule daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, or as advised by a physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment due to zinc and other mineral content. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. To minimize gastric upset, it's often recommended to take with meals. Do not chew or crush the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
The components of Renabec-FG act as essential cofactors in various metabolic processes. Iron is crucial for hemoglobin synthesis. Folic acid and Vitamin B12 are vital for DNA synthesis and erythropoiesis. B-complex vitamins participate in energy metabolism. Vitamin C aids iron absorption and acts as an antioxidant. Zinc is important for immune function and cell growth.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, as nutrient levels are replenished over days to weeks.
Excretion
Water-soluble vitamins are excreted mainly via urine. Iron is primarily excreted through feces (unabsorbed iron) and minimal amounts through bile, sweat, and desquamated cells. Zinc is mainly excreted via feces.
Half life
Variable for each component; water-soluble vitamins have shorter half-lives and are excreted via urine. Iron is primarily conserved, not excreted rapidly.
Absorption
Iron absorption (Ferrous Fumarate) is variable (5-35%), influenced by dietary factors and iron stores. Folic acid and B vitamins are well absorbed orally. Vitamin C is readily absorbed. Zinc absorption is also variable.
Metabolism
Each vitamin and mineral follows its specific metabolic pathway in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- Hemochromatosis and Hemosiderosis (conditions of iron overload)
- Other anemias not due to iron or folic acid deficiency (e.g., pernicious anemia without B12 supplementation)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Can reduce iron and zinc absorption. Take Renabec-FG at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Levodopa
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) can reduce the efficacy of levodopa.
Phenytoin
Folic acid can reduce phenytoin levels. Monitor carefully.
Thyroid hormones
Iron can reduce the absorption of thyroid hormones. Separate doses by several hours.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Iron and zinc can chelate these antibiotics, reducing their absorption. Separate administration by at least 2-4 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe gastrointestinal upset, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and in severe cases, metabolic acidosis, cardiovascular collapse, and liver damage, primarily due to iron toxicity. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage may be considered. Chelation therapy (e.g., deferoxamine) may be necessary in severe iron poisoning.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Renabec-FG is often indicated and beneficial during pregnancy and lactation due to increased requirements for iron, folic acid, and other vitamins/minerals. However, always consult a physician before use.
