Description
Overview of the medicine
Renal-Care-B Dialysis Solution is a sterile solution used in hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis to remove waste products, excess fluid, and correct electrolyte imbalances in patients with kidney failure.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage is highly individualized based on the patient's specific metabolic needs, body weight, residual renal function, dialysis modality (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis), and duration of treatment. Prescribed by a nephrologist.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but often adjusted considering comorbidities and overall patient condition. Careful monitoring is essential.
Renal_impairment
Used as a primary treatment for renal impairment/failure; dosage is part of the overall dialysis prescription and individualized.
How to Take
For hemodialysis, it is used as a dialysate concentrate or ready-to-use solution in conjunction with a dialysis machine. For peritoneal dialysis, the solution is instilled directly into the patient's peritoneal cavity via a catheter, allowed to dwell for a prescribed period, and then drained.
Mechanism of Action
It works by facilitating the exchange of solutes (waste products, electrolytes) and fluid across a semipermeable membrane (dialyzer in hemodialysis, peritoneal membrane in peritoneal dialysis) via diffusion and osmosis, driven by concentration gradients and osmotic pressure.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate upon initiation of dialysis.
Excretion
Waste products and excess fluid are removed from the body via the dialysate (spent solution).
Half life
Not applicable for the solution itself, as it is continuously exchanged during dialysis.
Absorption
Not absorbed systemically; acts on the blood or peritoneal fluid via membrane exchange.
Metabolism
Not metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to any component of the solution
- •Specific metabolic conditions that would be exacerbated by the solution's composition (e.g., severe lactic acidosis with lactate-containing solutions, specific electrolyte imbalances)
Drug Interactions
Drugs cleared by dialysis
Dialysis can remove certain medications from the bloodstream; dosage adjustments of such drugs may be necessary.
Electrolyte-altering drugs
Medications that affect electrolyte balance (e.g., diuretics, ACE inhibitors) may require careful monitoring and potential adjustments to the dialysate composition.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protect from freezing and extreme heat. Do not expose to direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose of the solution itself is not directly possible. However, improper dialysis prescriptions (e.g., too rapid fluid removal, incorrect electrolyte concentrations) or technical errors can lead to severe electrolyte imbalances, fluid shifts, hypotension, hypertension, and other life-threatening complications. Management involves immediate medical intervention to correct imbalances and address symptoms.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Dialysis is often life-sustaining for pregnant or lactating women with kidney failure. Treatment with dialysis solution should be continued under close medical supervision, with careful monitoring and adjustments to ensure maternal and fetal well-being.
