Description
Overview of the medicine
Residon 1 mg oral solution contains Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Schizophrenia: Initially 0.5-2 mg twice daily, adjusted to an optimal range of 2-8 mg/day. Bipolar mania: Initially 2-3 mg once daily, adjusted as needed. Autistic irritability: Start with 0.5 mg/day.
Elderly
Lower starting dose, typically 0.25 mg twice daily, with slower titration. Max 4 mg/day for schizophrenia.
Renal_impairment
Lower starting dose (e.g., 0.25 mg twice daily) and slower titration due to reduced clearance.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. The oral solution can be administered directly or mixed with water, coffee, orange juice, or low-fat milk. Do NOT mix with cola or tea. Use the provided calibrated pipette or dosing syringe for accurate measurement.
Mechanism of Action
Risperidone works by blocking dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the brain, helping to restore the balance of natural substances (neurotransmitters) and improve mood, thinking, and behavior.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects may begin within a few days, but full benefits often take several weeks.
Excretion
Approximately 70% of a dose is excreted in the urine and 14% in the feces. Renal excretion is the primary route for both risperidone and its active metabolite.
Half life
Risperidone has an elimination half-life of about 3 hours. Its active metabolite, 9-hydroxyrisperidone (paliperidone), has a half-life of about 21 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, not significantly affected by food. Peak plasma concentrations of risperidone occur within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensive hepatic metabolism, primarily by CYP2D6, to 9-hydroxyrisperidone, which is equally active. Some patients are poor CYP2D6 metabolizers.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to risperidone or to any excipients in the formulation.
- Concomitant use with drugs that prolong the QT interval (caution advised).
Drug Interactions
Antihypertensives
May enhance hypotensive effects.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines)
May potentiate the sedative effects.
CYP2D6 Inhibitors (e.g., fluoxetine, paroxetine)
May increase plasma concentrations of risperidone and its active metabolite.
CYP3A4 Inducers (e.g., carbamazepine, rifampicin)
May decrease plasma concentrations of risperidone and its active metabolite.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose typically include drowsiness, sedation, tachycardia, hypotension, and extrapyramidal symptoms. Severe overdose may lead to coma or seizures. Treatment is primarily supportive, including maintaining an open airway, oxygenation, and ventilation. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered. Continuous cardiovascular monitoring should be performed.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during breastfeeding as risperidone and its metabolites are excreted in human milk.

Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of weight, blood glucose, and lipid profile due to risk of metabolic changes.
- Prolactin levels should be monitored, especially if symptomatic.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) in case of suspected agranulocytosis.
- Liver and kidney function tests periodically.
Doctor Notes
- Initiate at a low dose and titrate slowly to minimize side effects, particularly in elderly or renally impaired patients.
- Monitor for metabolic syndrome parameters (weight, glucose, lipids) regularly.
- Assess for extrapyramidal symptoms and hyperprolactinemia.
- Educate patients and caregivers on medication adherence and potential side effects.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not stop taking this medication abruptly without consulting your doctor, as it can worsen your condition.
- Avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants, as they can increase drowsiness and dizziness.
