Description
Overview of the medicine
Riboflavine (Vitamin B2) is an essential water-soluble vitamin involved in metabolic processes. It is crucial for energy production, cellular function, growth, and development. This 5 mg tablet is typically used to prevent or treat riboflavin deficiency.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For riboflavin deficiency: 5-30 mg daily, divided into several doses. For general supplementation: 5-10 mg daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is typically needed for elderly patients, generally similar to adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required. Riboflavin is primarily excreted in urine; however, no significant toxicity is expected with kidney impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Taking with food may enhance absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Riboflavine is a precursor to flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), which are coenzymes involved in various redox reactions critical for energy metabolism, cellular respiration, and drug/toxin metabolism.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, as it contributes to long-term metabolic processes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine as free riboflavin or its metabolites. Causes a bright yellow discoloration of urine, especially at higher doses.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 hours for free riboflavin; however, functional half-life is longer due to conversion to FMN and FAD.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the upper gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine, via a saturable transport system. Absorption is dose-dependent and improved by the presence of food.
Metabolism
Converted to its active coenzyme forms, flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), mainly in the intestinal wall, liver, and blood.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to riboflavine or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May decrease riboflavin absorption.
Probenecid
May decrease renal tubular secretion of riboflavin.
Tetracyclines
Riboflavin may interfere with the absorption of tetracyclines. Separate administration by several hours.
Phenothiazines and Tricyclic Antidepressants
May inhibit the conversion of riboflavin to its active coenzyme forms.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Riboflavine is generally non-toxic even at high doses due to its limited absorption and rapid excretion. No specific antidote is available. Management is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Riboflavine is an essential vitamin during pregnancy and lactation. Recommended daily allowances increase during these periods. Generally considered safe when taken at recommended doses. Consult a doctor for specific guidance.
