Description
Overview of the medicine
Rixol 15 mg Syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It is used in various respiratory conditions associated with excessive or thick mucus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years: 10 ml (30 mg) 2-3 times daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Reduce dose or increase dosing interval in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. Use measuring cup/spoon for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol works by stimulating serous cells in the bronchial glands to produce a low-viscosity mucus, and by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides in the mucus, thereby reducing its viscosity and facilitating mucociliary clearance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes
Excretion
Mainly renal, approximately 90% excreted via kidneys, mostly as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours (terminal half-life)
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration; Tmax is 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, first-pass metabolism, forming inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or other components
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
Drug Interactions
Antitussives (cough suppressants)
Concomitant use with cough suppressants is not recommended as it may lead to a dangerous accumulation of bronchial secretions due to inhibition of the cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline)
Ambroxol may increase the penetration of antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their efficacy.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include diarrhea, restlessness, and stomach upset. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; gastric lavage may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category C. Should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk, caution advised during lactation.
