Description
Overview of the medicine
Robic 500 mg Tablet is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, bone, joint, and abdominal infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250 mg to 750 mg orally twice daily, depending on the infection severity and type. For Robic 500 mg, usually one tablet twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment based solely on age, but renal function should be considered.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with significant renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min).
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not take with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices. Swallow whole, do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Robic (Ciprofloxacin) inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (50-70% as unchanged drug) and to a lesser extent via the fecal route.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 70-80%.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism (15-30%) to four metabolites with less activity.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- Concomitant use with tizanidine
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effects, requiring INR monitoring.
Tizanidine
Concomitant use is contraindicated due to increased tizanidine plasma concentrations and adverse effects.
Theophylline
Increases plasma concentrations of Theophylline, leading to increased risk of toxicity.
Antacids (containing magnesium or aluminum)
Reduces absorption of Ciprofloxacin; take Ciprofloxacin 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment and supportive measures should be initiated. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered. Maintain adequate hydration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in human milk; avoid during breastfeeding or use with caution.
