Description
Overview of the medicine
Rotarac 0.09% Eye Drop is an ophthalmic solution containing a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to reduce eye pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) 2 to 4 times daily, as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch. Squeeze the bottle gently to instill one drop, then close eye slowly. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins and other inflammatory mediators responsible for pain and inflammation in the eye.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of analgesic effect typically within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Excretion
Excreted mainly through ocular elimination pathways; any systemically absorbed drug is excreted via urine.
Half life
Ocular tissue half-life not precisely determined, but systemic half-life is short due to minimal absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after ocular administration. Primarily absorbed locally within the ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in ocular tissues; minimal systemic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
- Patients with a history of aspirin-induced asthma, urticaria, or other allergic-type reactions to NSAIDs.
Drug Interactions
Other Ophthalmic NSAIDs
Concurrent use with other topical NSAIDs may increase the potential for adverse effects, especially corneal compromise.
Anticoagulants (systemic)
Although systemic absorption is minimal, theoretical risk of increased bleeding tendency with systemic anticoagulants. Use with caution.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
An ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken. If excess solution is instilled in the eye, it can be rinsed out with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult your doctor.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of similar ophthalmic NSAID formulations in reducing post-operative ocular inflammation and pain.
Lab Monitoring
- Not typically required for routine topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to report any persistent eye irritation or vision changes immediately.
- Caution against overuse to mitigate potential corneal adverse effects.
- Ensure proper instillation technique to maximize efficacy and minimize contamination risk.
Patient Guidelines
- Wash hands thoroughly before use.
- Do not wear contact lenses while using this medication, or wait at least 15 minutes after instillation before reinserting lenses.
