Description
Overview of the medicine
Roxiquin 200 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 200 mg orally twice daily, or as directed by a physician. Dosage and duration depend on the type and severity of infection.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but dose adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required for patients with creatinine clearance <30 mL/min. Consult a physician for specific recommendations.
How to Take
Roxiquin tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products, antacids, or iron/zinc supplements within 2 hours.
Mechanism of Action
It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 1-2 hours after administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (via urine), both as unchanged drug and metabolites.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 3-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, with good bioavailability.
Metabolism
Undergoes minor hepatic metabolism to several less active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Roxiquin or other fluoroquinolones.
- History of tendon disorders (e.g., tendinitis, tendon rupture) associated with quinolone use.
- Concomitant use with Tizanidine.
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsive seizures.
Warfarin
May increase anticoagulant effects of warfarin, requiring INR monitoring.
Tizanidine
Concomitant use is contraindicated due to increased risk of hypotension and sedation.
Antacids, Iron, Zinc, Sucralfate
May decrease Roxiquin absorption. Take Roxiquin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be performed. Symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Adequate hydration should be maintained.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to potential risks to the fetus/infant (e.g., cartilage damage). Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk, under strict medical supervision.
