Description
Overview of the medicine
Sabutanol 2 mg tablet is a bronchodilator used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 2-4 mg three or four times daily. A single dose of 8 mg may be used in some patients.
Elderly
A starting dose of 2 mg three or four times daily, adjusting according to response.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding frequency and duration.
Mechanism of Action
Sabutanol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the bronchial tree, leading to relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscles and bronchodilation. This action helps to alleviate bronchospasm.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bronchodilation typically occurs within 30 minutes to 1 hour after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites and unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sabutanol or any component of the formulation.
- Threatened abortion (oral salbutamol preparations).
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers

MAOIs and TCAs
May potentiate the cardiovascular effects of sabutanol.
Diuretics (e.g., loop or thiazide diuretics)
May potentiate the risk of hypokalemia.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tachycardia, tremors, palpitations, headache, hypokalemia, and hyperglycemia. Management is supportive and symptomatic, with cardiac monitoring and correction of electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Sabutanol is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
