Description
Overview of the medicine
Salburen 100 mcg Inhaler contains Salbutamol (also known as Albuterol), a fast-acting bronchodilator used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For relief of acute symptoms: 1 or 2 puffs (100 or 200 mcg) as required. For prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm: 2 puffs 10-15 minutes before exercise.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, but caution for co-morbidities.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment generally required, but monitor for systemic effects.
How to Take
For oral inhalation only. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Exhale fully, then place the mouthpiece in the mouth, press down on the canister while inhaling slowly and deeply. Hold breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. If more than one puff is prescribed, wait 30-60 seconds between puffs.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol is a selective beta-2 adrenoceptor agonist. It stimulates beta-2 receptors in the smooth muscle of the bronchial tree, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscle, bronchodilation, and increased airflow. It also inhibits the release of mast cell mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 5-15 minutes
Excretion
Excreted mainly via urine, both as unchanged drug and its metabolite.
Half life
Systemic half-life of 2.7-5 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the lungs, with systemic bioavailability of about 10-20%.
Metabolism
Undergoes metabolism to inactive sulfate conjugate primarily in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- Tachyarrhythmia
- Severe underlying heart disease
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May potentiate hypokalemia.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
Can block the bronchodilatory effect of salbutamol.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
May potentiate cardiovascular effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from frost and direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Do not pierce or burn the container even when empty.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, hypokalemia, and hyperglycemia. Treatment is supportive; consider a cardioselective beta-blocker with caution if severe cardiac symptoms occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.

Doctor Notes
- Educate patients on proper inhaler technique.
- Emphasize that this is a 'reliever' medication, not a 'controller.'
- Assess for overuse, which may signal inadequate controller therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Read the patient information leaflet carefully before use.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
- Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or if the inhaler is needed more frequently.
- Always carry your inhaler with you.
- Rinse your mouth after use.
Missed Dose Advice
As this medication is used on an as-needed basis for acute symptoms or prevention, a regularly missed dose is not typically applicable. Use as directed when symptoms occur or before anticipated triggers.
Driving Precautions
Generally, salbutamol does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if side effects like tremor or dizziness occur, advise caution.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid triggers that worsen asthma/COPD (e.g., smoke, allergens).
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet (if health allows).
