Description
Overview of the medicine
Saliben 6-3 Ointment contains Salicylic Acid and Benzoic Acid. It is primarily used to treat fungal skin infections like athlete's foot and ringworm, and also helps to remove scales from skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema due to its keratolytic properties.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply thinly to affected areas twice daily, morning and evening, after washing and drying the skin. Continue for at least 4 weeks for fungal infections, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash and thoroughly dry the affected area before applying the ointment. Apply a thin layer and gently rub it into the skin. Wash hands immediately after application.
Mechanism of Action
Salicylic acid acts as a keratolytic agent, softening and loosening scaly skin by dissolving the intercellular cement in the stratum corneum. It also has mild antifungal and antiseptic properties. Benzoic acid is an antifungal agent that inhibits the growth of various fungi by altering cell membrane permeability. The combination provides both antifungal and keratolytic actions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Visible improvement typically within a few days to a week.
Excretion
Primarily via urine for systemically absorbed components.
Half life
Not clinically significant for topical use.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from topical application. Salicylic acid can be absorbed transdermally, especially from large areas or occluded skin, but generally low. Benzoic acid absorption is also minimal.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed salicylic acid is metabolized in the liver. Benzoic acid is conjugated with glycine in the liver to form hippuric acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salicylic acid, benzoic acid, or any component of the ointment
- Application on broken, irritated, or inflamed skin
- Application on mucous membranes or near the eyes
- Infants and young children due to risk of systemic absorption and toxicity
Drug Interactions
Other topical preparations
Avoid concurrent use of other topical medications on the same area unless advised by a doctor, as it may lead to increased irritation or altered absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Systemic overdose from topical application is unlikely but may occur with extensive use on large areas, broken skin, or in young children, leading to salicylism (e.g., tinnitus, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Benzoic acid overdose is very rare and typically less severe.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Avoid applying to large areas or for prolonged periods, especially during lactation on areas where the infant may come into contact.
