Description
Overview of the medicine
Saline-R 10.25 gm Powder is an Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) formulation used to prevent and treat dehydration caused by conditions such as diarrhea, vomiting, and excessive sweating. It replenishes lost fluids and essential electrolytes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dissolve one sachet (10.25 gm) in 500 ml of pure drinking water. For mild to moderate dehydration: Drink 1-2 liters (2-4 sachets) over 2-4 hours initially, then 250-500 ml after each loose stool until dehydration subsides. Total intake may be up to 12 sachets in 24 hours.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. Care should be taken in patients with pre-existing cardiac or renal conditions.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment; consult a physician. May require adjustment of fluid and electrolyte intake.
How to Take
Dissolve the entire contents of one sachet (10.25 gm) in 500 ml of clean, safe drinking water. Stir until the powder is completely dissolved. Do not boil the solution after preparation. Drink slowly.
Mechanism of Action
ORS works by utilizing the sodium-glucose co-transport system in the small intestine, where glucose facilitates the absorption of sodium and water. This helps to restore fluid and electrolyte balance in the body, combating dehydration.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Fluid and electrolyte replacement begins shortly after oral administration, typically within minutes.
Excretion
Excess electrolytes are excreted primarily via the kidneys.
Half life
Not applicable in the conventional sense for a rehydration solution; the components are utilized as needed.
Absorption
Water and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate) are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Glucose is metabolized for energy; electrolytes are distributed and utilized according to physiological needs.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluid therapy.
- Intestinal obstruction, paralytic ileus, or other conditions preventing oral absorption.
- Persistent vomiting, anuria (absence of urine production).
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
Caution with diuretics, especially those affecting potassium levels, as this can affect electrolyte balance. Monitor electrolyte levels if co-administered.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare with proper preparation. Improper preparation (e.g., using too little water) can lead to hypernatremia. Symptoms may include extreme thirst, lethargy, irritability, and seizures. Management involves correcting the electrolyte imbalance, usually with water and medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Saline-R is safe for use during pregnancy and lactation. Dehydration can be harmful to both mother and fetus/infant, so prompt rehydration is crucial.

Lab Monitoring
- Generally not required for routine use.
- In severe cases or with underlying conditions, serum electrolyte levels (sodium, potassium) and renal function may be monitored.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of correct preparation using clean water and accurate volume.
- Advise parents/patients to continue feeding, especially breastfeeding, during diarrhea and ORS administration.
- Educate on signs of severe dehydration requiring immediate medical attention (e.g., inability to drink, sunken eyes, lethargy).
Patient Guidelines
- Always use clean, boiled, and cooled water for preparation.
- Do not add sugar or any other ingredients to the ORS solution.
- Discard any unused solution after 12 hours.
- Continue regular feeding, especially breastfeeding, during ORS therapy.
Missed Dose Advice
ORS is taken on an as-needed basis for fluid and electrolyte replacement. If a dose is missed, administer as soon as possible when symptoms of dehydration are present or fluid loss occurs. Do not take a double dose.
Driving Precautions
Saline-R does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Practice good hand hygiene to prevent the spread of infections.
- Ensure access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation.
