Description
Overview of the medicine
Salost 5 mg Tablet contains Salbutamol (also known as Albuterol), which is a short-acting beta-2 agonist (SABA) bronchodilator. It is used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral: 2 mg to 4 mg three or four times daily. In some cases, doses up to 8 mg four times daily may be used. 5 mg tablet is often used for severe conditions or as prescribed by a physician.
Elderly
Lower initial doses may be considered, e.g., 2 mg three or four times daily, with careful titration based on response and tolerability.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take the tablet whole with water. It can be taken with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the bronchi, leading to relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscle and bronchodilation. This helps to open the airways and improve breathing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes (oral tablet)
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine as metabolites and unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations occur within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- Threatened abortion (oral salbutamol preparations are contraindicated)
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May decrease serum digoxin levels.
Diuretics
May cause ECG changes and/or hypokalemia, especially with high doses of beta-agonists.
MAOIs and TCAs
Concurrent administration may potentiate the vascular effects of salbutamol, increasing the risk of cardiovascular adverse effects.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
May antagonize the bronchodilatory effect of salbutamol and can cause severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, palpitations, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, and lactic acidosis. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; cardiovascular monitoring and potassium level monitoring are important.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Salbutamol is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
