Description
Overview of the medicine
Saltide is a synthetic corticosteroid delivered as a respirator solution for the management of chronic inflammatory airway diseases such as asthma and COPD.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
25 mg (1 ampoule) via nebulizer once daily, or 12.5 mg twice daily, adjusted based on clinical response.
Elderly
Same as adults, with caution and monitoring for systemic side effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required, but use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
For nebulization only. Administer using a jet nebulizer with a mouthpiece or face mask. Do not swallow. Do not inject. Rinse mouth thoroughly with water after each use.
Mechanism of Action
Saltide acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent by binding to glucocorticoid receptors in airway cells, inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and reducing airway hyper-responsiveness.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours, full therapeutic effect within days to weeks of regular use.
Excretion
Primarily via bile and feces; a small amount via urine.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours (systemic), longer in the lungs.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the lungs; low systemic bioavailability due to extensive first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via CYP450 enzymes, primarily CYP3A4.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Saltide or any excipients
- Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma or COPD where intensive measures are required
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers
Could reduce the bronchodilatory effect of concomitant bronchodilators and should be used with caution.
CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir)
May significantly increase systemic exposure to Saltide, leading to potential adrenal suppression. Co-administration should be avoided or carefully monitored.
Storage
Store at 20-25°C (68-77°F); excursions permitted to 15-30°C (59-86°F). Protect from light and freezing. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely to cause severe systemic effects. Chronic overdose may lead to adrenal suppression and Cushingoid features. Management includes symptomatic and supportive care; dose reduction or temporary discontinuation may be required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus/infant. Consult a physician to discuss risks and benefits.

Clinical Trials
Phase III clinical trials demonstrated significant improvement in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and reduction in exacerbation rates in patients with severe asthma and COPD. Long-term safety and efficacy data are continuously being gathered.
Lab Monitoring
- Adrenal function tests (for long-term high-dose therapy)
- Bone mineral density (for prolonged use)
- Eye exams (for long-term use to monitor for cataracts and glaucoma)
- Growth monitoring (in pediatric patients)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper nebulization technique and patient education on rinsing mouth after each use to minimize local side effects.
- Monitor for signs of systemic corticosteroid effects, especially in patients transitioning from oral steroids or on high doses for prolonged periods.
- Regular assessment of lung function and patient symptoms is crucial for dose adjustment.
Patient Guidelines
- Rinse mouth thoroughly with water after each nebulization to reduce the risk of oral thrush.
- Do not stop treatment abruptly without consulting a doctor.
- Report any vision changes or signs of infection to your doctor.
- Use the nebulizer correctly as instructed by your healthcare provider.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Saltide is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or blurred vision, avoid these activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid smoking and exposure to respiratory irritants.
- Maintain good oral hygiene.
- Regular exercise as tolerated to support overall health and lung function.
