Description
Overview of the medicine
SB-Cal-D is a nutritional supplement combining Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3. It is used to prevent and treat calcium and Vitamin D deficiencies, promoting bone health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, or as directed by a physician, with careful monitoring for renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and dose adjustment may be required; monitor calcium and phosphate levels.
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food. For best absorption, it is often recommended to take with meals.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is an essential mineral for bone formation, nerve transmission, and muscle function. Vitamin D3 facilitates calcium absorption from the gut and its deposition into bones.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Nutritional effects are gradual and long-term.
Excretion
Calcium: Primarily fecal, some renal. Vitamin D3: Primarily biliary/fecal, some renal.
Half life
Elemental Calcium: Short; Vitamin D3: 15-20 days (for 25(OH)D3).
Absorption
Calcium absorption depends on dose, dietary factors, and Vitamin D status. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the small intestine.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized; Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D], the active form.
