Description
Overview of the medicine
Scabfre 5% w/w Cream contains Permethrin, an antiparasitic agent used for the treatment of scabies caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It is applied topically to the skin.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to all skin surfaces from the neck to the soles of the feet. Leave on for 8-14 hours, then wash off thoroughly. A single application is usually sufficient.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. Exercise caution in patients with extremely fragile skin.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for topical application as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For topical application only. Apply to clean, dry skin. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, and genital area. Wash hands thoroughly after application.
Mechanism of Action
Permethrin acts as a neurotoxin to mites and lice by disrupting the sodium channel current that regulates the polarization of the nerve cell membrane. This leads to paralysis and death of the parasites.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is relatively rapid, with clinical improvement typically observed within days of treatment.
Excretion
Metabolites are primarily excreted in the urine.
Half life
The systemic half-life of absorbed permethrin is approximately 1-2 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (less than 2%) occurs after topical application of permethrin cream. The absorbed amount is rapidly metabolized.
Metabolism
Permethrin is rapidly metabolized in the liver by ester hydrolysis to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to permethrin, other pyrethroids, or any component of the cream.
Drug Interactions
None reported
Due to minimal systemic absorption, significant drug interactions are unlikely with topical permethrin.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical application due to minimal systemic absorption. In case of accidental oral ingestion, gastric lavage may be considered. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Permethrin is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, but should be used under medical supervision. Limited data available on excretion in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administering to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor before use.
