Description
Overview of the medicine
Scabisad-09-W Suspension contains Permethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, and is used to treat infestations of scabies (caused by mites) and lice. It is a 5% w/v suspension formulated for external application.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For scabies: Apply 5% suspension from the neck down to the soles of the feet. Wash off after 8-14 hours. A single application is usually curative, but a second application may be needed after 7-10 days if live mites are still present.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. Use with caution if skin is very sensitive.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is typically required for topical use.
How to Take
Apply a thin layer of the suspension to clean, dry skin covering the entire body from the neck down to the soles of the feet. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes. Leave on for 8-14 hours, then wash off thoroughly with water during a shower or bath.
Mechanism of Action
Permethrin acts on the nervous system of parasites (mites and lice) by disrupting the sodium channel currents in their nerve cell membranes. This leads to hyperexcitation, paralysis, and ultimately death of the parasites.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of parasiticidal activity upon contact.
Excretion
Metabolites are primarily excreted in the urine.
Half life
If absorbed systemically, half-life is approximately 6-12 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (less than 2%) occurs after topical application.
Metabolism
Rapidly hydrolyzed to inactive metabolites by esterase enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to permethrin, other pyrethroids, pyrethrins, or any component of the formulation.
- Should be used with caution in individuals with a history of asthma or breathing problems as it may exacerbate respiratory symptoms.
Drug Interactions
Other topical preparations
Concurrent use of other topical creams or lotions may increase systemic absorption or skin irritation.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
If ingested: Gastrointestinal decontamination (e.g., gastric lavage, activated charcoal) and supportive care. If excessive topical application: Rinse off thoroughly with water. Symptomatic treatment for any irritation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, but consult a doctor. Minimal systemic absorption. Use with caution in nursing mothers, though negligible amounts are likely to be secreted into breast milk.
