Description
Overview of the medicine
Scrublon is a broad-spectrum antiseptic solution used for skin disinfection, surgical hand scrubbing, and wound management. It contains Povidone-Iodine, which effectively kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For surgical hand scrub, wet hands and forearms, apply 5 mL of Scrublon solution, scrub thoroughly for 5 minutes, rinse, and repeat. For skin preparation, apply undiluted and allow to dry. For wounds, dilute with water as directed or apply undiluted.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required. Use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for topical use; caution with large, prolonged application in severe renal impairment due to potential iodine absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply to the skin as directed. Do not ingest. Avoid contact with eyes.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-Iodine works by releasing free iodine, which rapidly penetrates microbial cells and oxidizes proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to cell death. It has a broad microbicidal spectrum.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate upon application.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys as iodide.
Half life
Not significant for topical application; systemic half-life of absorbed iodine is approximately 1-2 days.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Increased absorption may occur through damaged skin or mucous membranes.
Metabolism
Absorbed iodine is metabolized in the liver to iodide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone
- Thyroid disorders (especially hyperthyroidism)
- Before and after radioiodine therapy
- In very low birth weight infants
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Systemic absorption may increase risk of hypothyroidism.
Enzyme preparations
May reduce antiseptic efficacy.
Octenidine containing products
May cause transient purple discoloration.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is unlikely with proper topical use. Ingestion or excessive absorption may lead to iodine toxicity (e.g., metallic taste, gastrointestinal upset, anuria). Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution; avoid prolonged or extensive use due to potential for iodine absorption and effects on fetal/neonatal thyroid function. Consult a doctor.
