Description
Overview of the medicine
Sectil 40 mg Capsule contains Secnidazole, an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent, used for the treatment of various parasitic and bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage must be determined by a physician based on the specific infection and patient's condition. Standard Secnidazole dosages are typically much higher (e.g., 500 mg, 1 g, 2 g) than 40 mg.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment for elderly patients is generally required, but caution is advised. Consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in patients with severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally, preferably with food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. Swallow whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Secnidazole works by interfering with the DNA synthesis of susceptible microorganisms, leading to their death. It exhibits bactericidal action against anaerobic bacteria and parasiticidal action against protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by indication and individual response.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via urine, with a significant portion eliminated unchanged.
Half life
Approximately 17-29 hours, indicating a prolonged duration of action.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, with peak plasma concentrations achieved within 3-4 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Secnidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives.
- First trimester of pregnancy.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Disulfiram-like reaction (nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, flushing) may occur. Avoid alcohol consumption during and for at least 72 hours after treatment.
Lithium
May increase lithium plasma levels, leading to toxicity.
Warfarin (anticoagulants)
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be administered. There is no specific antidote for Secnidazole.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy. Use with caution in the second and third trimesters only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Secnidazole is excreted in breast milk; therefore, use during lactation should be avoided or breast-feeding interrupted.
