Description
Overview of the medicine
Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent used to relieve discomfort caused by excess gas in the stomach and intestines. It works by breaking up gas bubbles, making them easier to pass.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed as it is not absorbed systemically.
Infants_under_2_years
0.3 mL (approx. 20 mg) 4 times daily, or as directed by a physician. Do not exceed 12 doses per day (e.g., 240 mg).
Children_2_to_12_years
0.6 mL (approx. 40 mg) 4 times daily, or as directed by a physician. Do not exceed 12 doses per day (e.g., 480 mg).
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer the prescribed dose directly into the infant's or child's mouth using the calibrated dropper provided, or mix it with a small amount of cool water, formula, or other liquid.
Mechanism of Action
Simethicone acts as an anti-foaming agent in the gastrointestinal tract. It reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing them to coalesce into larger bubbles that are more easily passed or absorbed, thereby relieving bloating, pressure, and discomfort.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within minutes to an hour.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in the feces.
Half life
Not applicable, as it is not absorbed systemically.
Absorption
Simethicone is physiologically inert and is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to simethicone or any component of the formulation.
- Suspected or diagnosed intestinal perforation or obstruction.
Drug Interactions
Thyroid Hormone
Simethicone may temporarily decrease the absorption of thyroid hormone medications (e.g., levothyroxine) when taken concurrently. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Other Medications
Generally, simethicone does not have significant systemic drug interactions due to its lack of systemic absorption. However, it can potentially interfere with the absorption of other oral medications if taken simultaneously.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose with simethicone is unlikely to cause serious systemic toxicity due to its non-absorption. In case of accidental ingestion of very large quantities, supportive care and observation are usually sufficient.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Simethicone is generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation as it is not absorbed systemically. However, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before using any medication during these periods.

Lab Monitoring
- No specific laboratory monitoring is required for simethicone treatment.
Doctor Notes
- Reassure parents about the safety profile of simethicone, especially its non-systemic absorption.
- Educate parents on proper dosing and administration techniques.
- Advise to rule out other causes of infant distress if symptoms persist despite simethicone use.
Patient Guidelines
- Always shake the bottle well before administering the drops.
- Use the provided calibrated dropper for accurate dosing. Do not use household spoons.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage without consulting a doctor.
- If symptoms persist or worsen after a few days, consult your pediatrician.
Missed Dose Advice

Driving Precautions
Not applicable, as this is a pediatric medication and does not affect the central nervous system.
