Description
Overview of the medicine
Sinecod-SR 50 mg tablet is a sustained-release formulation containing Butamirate Citrate, used as a non-opioid cough suppressant to relieve dry, unproductive coughs. Its sustained-release action provides prolonged relief.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One 50 mg SR tablet once or twice daily, as directed by physician. Maximum 100 mg/day.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised in elderly patients with impaired renal or hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment guidelines; use with caution.
How to Take
Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew or crush. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Butamirate Citrate acts centrally on the cough reflex center in the brainstem, specifically by inhibiting afferent vagal nerve activity, thereby suppressing the cough reflex without affecting the respiratory center.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 30-60 minutes, with sustained effect due to SR formulation.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the kidneys in the urine, mainly as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours for the active metabolite, with prolonged effective half-life due to SR formulation.
Absorption
Readily and rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with sustained-release formulation providing prolonged absorption.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to active metabolites, primarily 2-phenylbutyric acid and diethylaminoethoxyethanol.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Butamirate Citrate or any component of the formulation
- Children under 6 years for SR tablets (or as specified by local guidelines)
Drug Interactions
Other Drugs
No significant clinically relevant drug interactions have been reported.
Expectorants/Mucolytics
Concomitant use with expectorants or mucolytics may lead to accumulation of bronchial secretions due to inhibition of the cough reflex.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and hypotension. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment, gastric lavage, and activated charcoal if overdose is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use with caution during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Not recommended during the first trimester. Limited data on excretion into breast milk; use with caution in lactating mothers.
