Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg twice daily or 400 mg once daily, for 7 to 14 days depending on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Adjust dose based on creatinine clearance (e.g., if CrCl < 60 mL/min, reduce dose).
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food. Shake suspension well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).

Renal excretion (about 50% unchanged in urine), and some biliary excretion.

Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing Cefixime.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during lactation; small amounts may be excreted in breast milk.
