Description
Overview of the medicine
Mupirocin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount to the affected area three times daily for 5-10 days, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area after washing hands. Wash hands again after application unless hands are the treated area. The treated area may be covered with gauze dressing if desired.
Mechanism of Action
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, thereby preventing the incorporation of isoleucine into proteins.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action locally, with bacterial eradication typically seen within days.
Excretion
Monic acid, the inactive metabolite, is primarily excreted renally.
Half life
Not significant due to minimal systemic absorption; estimated 20-40 minutes after IV (not applicable for topical).
Absorption
Minimally absorbed systemically through intact skin. Absorption is increased in denuded skin or wounds.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized to monic acid, an inactive metabolite, in the skin and blood.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any of the excipients of the preparation.
- •Not for ophthalmic or intranasal use.
Drug Interactions
No significant systemic interactions
Due to minimal systemic absorption, clinically significant systemic drug interactions are unlikely.
Storage
Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical application. If the ointment is accidentally ingested, seek medical advice. No specific antidote is available.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Use only if clearly needed and after consulting a doctor. Minimal systemic absorption suggests low risk during lactation, but caution is advised.
