Description
Overview of the medicine
Solodex JR is an extended-release capsule combining an antihistamine (Loratadine) and a decongestant (Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride) used for relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose or throat, and nasal congestion.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One capsule every 12 hours, as needed.
Elderly
Use with caution; consult physician for dose adjustment in renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Adjust dose to one capsule every other day for creatinine clearance <30 mL/min.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush, chew, or break.
Mechanism of Action
Loratadine is a long-acting H1-receptor antagonist that selectively inhibits peripheral H1-receptors. Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine that directly and indirectly stimulates adrenergic receptors, leading to vasoconstriction and reduced nasal congestion.

Excretion
Loratadine and its metabolites are excreted equally in urine and feces. Pseudoephedrine is primarily excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
Loratadine: 8-24 hours (active metabolite desloratadine: 15-37 hours); Pseudoephedrine: 9-16 hours
Absorption
Loratadine is rapidly absorbed and extensively metabolized. Pseudoephedrine is well absorbed from the GI tract.
Metabolism
Loratadine is extensively metabolized in the liver to descarboethoxyloratadine (desloratadine). Pseudoephedrine is partially metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Loratadine, Pseudoephedrine, or any component
- •Patients on MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping MAO inhibitors
- •Severe hypertension or severe coronary artery disease
Drug Interactions
Digitalis
Increased risk of ectopic pacemaker activity.
Beta-blockers
May reduce antihypertensive effect and increase risk of pseudoephedrine-related cardiovascular effects.
MAO inhibitors
May lead to hypertensive crisis.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, tachycardia, hypertension, headache, seizures. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B for Loratadine, Category C for Pseudoephedrine. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Not recommended during breastfeeding as both components are excreted in breast milk.
