Description
Overview of the medicine
Somolax 60 mg Tablet is a stimulant laxative used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. It works by increasing bowel activity to produce a bowel movement.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
60 mg (1 tablet) orally, preferably at bedtime, once daily.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; caution is advised due to potential for electrolyte imbalance.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment; consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with a glass of water, preferably at bedtime, to produce a bowel movement the next morning. Do not chew or crush the tablet. Avoid taking with milk or antacids.
Mechanism of Action
Somolaxin directly stimulates the nerve endings in the colon, causing increased colonic motility and promotion of fluid and electrolyte secretion into the intestinal lumen, leading to easier bowel movements.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
6-12 hours (oral)
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces as active and inactive metabolites; minimal renal excretion.
Half life
Not extensively characterized for active compounds, as it acts locally.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; primarily acts locally in the colon.
Metabolism
Metabolized by gut bacteria to active compounds.

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Somolaxin or any component of the tablet
- Acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis, severe abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction)
- Undiagnosed rectal bleeding
- Severe dehydration
Drug Interactions
Antacids/Milk
Should not be taken within one hour of Somolax as they can dissolve the enteric coating prematurely, leading to gastric irritation.
Diuretics/Corticosteroids
Concurrent use may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe abdominal cramps, watery diarrhea, significant fluid and electrolyte loss (especially potassium). Management involves symptomatic and supportive care, including fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally not recommended during pregnancy or lactation without consulting a doctor. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Pregnancy Category: C.
