Description
Overview of the medicine
Soracent 200 mg Tablet contains Soracin, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg once daily or 100 mg twice daily, depending on the severity of infection. For severe infections, dosage may be increased to 200 mg twice daily.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution advised; monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. Consult physician for specific recommendations.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Soracin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antibacterial effect typically observed within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Approximately 2-4 hours, allowing for once or twice daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Soracin, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; use additional birth control methods.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect, requiring closer monitoring of INR.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and possibly neurological disturbances (e.g., convulsions) especially in patients with renal impairment. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis may be beneficial in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts may pass into breast milk; consult a doctor before breastfeeding.
