Description
Overview of the medicine
SOS Saline powder is an Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) formulation used to prevent and treat dehydration caused by diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating. It replenishes essential electrolytes and fluids lost from the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
As per WHO guidelines: 200-400 ml after each loose stool, up to 2-3 liters per day or as directed by a physician. In severe dehydration, administer rapidly until rehydrated.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, monitor for fluid overload in those with cardiac or renal issues.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor electrolyte levels due to potential for electrolyte imbalance, especially potassium and sodium retention. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Dissolve the entire 1025 gm powder in 50 liters of clean drinking water. Stir until completely dissolved. Administer orally. Do not boil the solution after preparation. Use within 12 hours if kept at room temperature or 24 hours if refrigerated.
Mechanism of Action
ORS works by exploiting the co-transport of sodium and glucose across the intestinal wall. When taken orally, glucose helps in the absorption of sodium and water, thus restoring fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excess electrolytes are primarily excreted via the kidneys.
Half life
Not applicable for a mixture of electrolytes and glucose; individual components are metabolized or excreted.
Absorption
Electrolytes and water are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Glucose is metabolized for energy; electrolytes are utilized or excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Intestinal obstruction (e.g., ileus).
- Severe vomiting making oral intake impossible.
- Glucose malabsorption.
Drug Interactions
No significant interactions
Generally safe. No significant drug interactions are known when used as directed.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Over-administration in individuals with impaired renal function or congestive heart failure may lead to fluid overload, hypernatremia, or hyperkalemia. Management includes discontinuing ORS and correcting electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safe for use during pregnancy and lactation. It helps to prevent dehydration, which can be harmful during these periods.

Lab Monitoring
- Generally not required for routine ORS use.
- In severe dehydration or specific medical conditions, monitoring of serum electrolytes (sodium, potassium) and renal function may be necessary.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize correct reconstitution to prevent adverse effects.
- Advise continued feeding and early return to normal diet.
- Educate patients on recognizing signs of severe dehydration requiring hospital admission.
Patient Guidelines
- Always use clean, potable water for reconstitution.
- Adhere strictly to the recommended water volume to avoid incorrect concentration (1025 gm powder for 50 liters).
- Do not add sugar or other ingredients to the ORS solution.
- Discard unused solution after 12 hours at room temperature or 24 hours if refrigerated.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, continue with the next scheduled dose as needed. ORS is given as needed to maintain hydration, not on a strict schedule.
Driving Precautions
No known effects on driving ability or operating machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Continue feeding infants and children during diarrhea.
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent further spread of infection.
