Description
Overview of the medicine
Spark 200 mg Tablet contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg once daily or 100 mg twice daily, depending on the infection severity. Usual duration is 7-14 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required unless renal function is significantly impaired.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, 75% of the standard dose should be given. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, 50% of the standard dose should be given.
How to Take
Spark 200 mg Tablet can be taken with or without food. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of medication in your body. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall. This binding prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan units, which are essential for the structural integrity of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour for antibacterial effect.
Excretion
Excreted predominantly by renal mechanisms (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion). Approximately 50% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed orally. Food may delay absorption but does not significantly alter the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased prothrombin time (INR), potential for bleeding. Monitor INR closely.
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma levels and prolong its half-life by inhibiting renal excretion.
Oral Anticoagulants
May enhance anticoagulant effects. Monitor coagulation parameters.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (for prolonged therapy or in patients with renal impairment)
- Complete blood count (CBC) if long-term use is anticipated
- Liver function tests (LFTs) occasionally
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of completing the entire antibiotic course to prevent resistance.
- Advise patients to report persistent diarrhea, especially if bloody or watery, as it may indicate C. difficile infection.
- Counsel on potential drug interactions, particularly with anticoagulants.

- Complete the full course of medication, even if symptoms improve, to prevent recurrence and development of antibiotic resistance.
- Do not share your medication with others.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
