Description
Overview of the medicine
A topical cream containing an antifungal (Econazole Nitrate) and a corticosteroid (Betamethasone Valerate) used to treat various fungal skin infections accompanied by inflammation, itching, and redness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area once or twice daily. Gently rub in. Treatment should not exceed 2-4 weeks without medical review.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but caution with prolonged use due to thinning skin.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical use.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply to clean, dry skin. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes. Do not use occlusive dressings unless advised by a doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Econazole Nitrate inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased membrane permeability and leakage of cellular contents. Betamethasone Valerate is a potent corticosteroid that suppresses inflammatory responses, reduces itching, and causes vasoconstriction.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief may begin within a few days.
Excretion
Primarily through urine and feces (for systemically absorbed portions).
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application; systemic half-life of absorbed components varies.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from intact skin for both components. Absorption increases with inflammation, occlusion, and prolonged use.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver (for systemically absorbed portions).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Econazole, Betamethasone, or any excipients.
- •Viral infections of the skin (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella).
- •Tuberculous lesions of the skin.
- •Acne rosacea, perioral dermatitis.
- •Diaper dermatitis in infants.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Econazole may enhance the anticoagulant effect of Warfarin (rare with topical use).
Other topical steroids
Avoid concomitant use to prevent excessive steroid exposure.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. Excessive topical application or prolonged use may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects (e.g., Cushing's syndrome, adrenal suppression), especially in children. Symptomatic and supportive treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and under strict medical supervision. Avoid extensive or prolonged use, especially during the first trimester. Use with caution during lactation; avoid applying to breasts.
