Description
Overview of the medicine
Spusoft 175 mg Syrup is a broad-spectrum antibiotic containing Spusomoxil, used for treating various bacterial infections. It is effective against both Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg (approx. 7-14 ml) three times daily, depending on infection severity.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required. Refer to prescribing information. For creatinine clearance 10-30 ml/min, reduce dose by half. For creatinine clearance <10 ml/min, reduce dose by two-thirds.
Children_over_2_years
20-40 mg/kg/day in divided doses, or as directed by physician. A typical dose might be 5 ml (175 mg) two to three times daily for children weighing 15-25 kg.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. For best absorption and to minimize gastrointestinal upset, it is often recommended to take it with meals. Shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Spusomoxil, a beta-lactam antibiotic, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.5-2 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Spusomoxil or any other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins).
- History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to beta-lactams.
- Infectious mononucleosis (increased risk of rash).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs Spusomoxil plasma levels by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of rash when taken concurrently.
Methotrexate
Spusomoxil may reduce methotrexate excretion, increasing toxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance anticoagulant effect, monitor INR.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms include gastrointestinal effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. In severe cases, crystalluria, renal failure, or convulsions may occur. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis may be used to remove Spusomoxil from circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered safe but monitor infant for potential adverse effects (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).
