Description
Overview of the medicine
Sputen 4 mg syrup is an antihistamine medication used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria, and other allergic conditions. It helps to reduce itching, sneezing, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: 10 ml (8 mg) once daily or 5 ml (4 mg) twice daily.
Elderly
Elderly: 5 ml (4 mg) once daily, adjust based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Renal impairment: Dosage adjustment required; 5 ml (4 mg) every 2 days for mild to moderate impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Sputen syrup should be taken orally, with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup provided with the package for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Sputen acts as a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It prevents histamine from binding to H1 receptors, thereby inhibiting the symptoms of histamine-mediated allergic reactions such as vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, and itching.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the urine, largely as unchanged drug and its metabolites.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 8-12 hours in adults, longer in elderly and renal impaired patients.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver, but to a lesser extent than first-generation antihistamines.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to sputen or any component of the formulation.
- •Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 ml/min).
- •Children under 6 months of age.
Drug Interactions
Theophylline

CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
Concomitant use may enhance CNS depression.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, tachycardia, and urinary retention. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered shortly after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm, but adequate studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use only if clearly needed. Sputen is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
