Description
Overview of the medicine
Starin-PD Pediatric Drop contains Desloratadine, a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis (e.g., sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose/palate, itchy watery eyes) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (e.g., itching and hive size and number).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not applicable for pediatric drop. Adult dosage for Desloratadine is typically 5 mg once daily.
Elderly
Not applicable for pediatric drop. No specific dose adjustment generally needed for elderly with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
For severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min), dosage may need adjustment (e.g., 5 mg every other day for adults). For pediatric drop, consult physician.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food, using the provided calibrated dropper or spoon. Shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Desloratadine is a long-acting, tricyclic antihistamine with selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist activity. It inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells and blocks its binding to H1 receptors, thereby preventing the associated allergic symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine and feces as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 27 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in approximately 3 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized to 3-hydroxydesloratadine (an active metabolite) and its glucuronide conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Desloratadine, Loratadine, or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with phenylketonuria (if formulation contains aspartame).
Drug Interactions
Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, Azithromycin, Fluoxetine, Cimetidine
Coadministration with Desloratadine increases plasma concentrations of Desloratadine and its metabolite, but without clinically significant safety concerns.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In the event of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Desloratadine is not eliminated by hemodialysis. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use in pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Desloratadine passes into breast milk, therefore caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
