Description
Overview of the medicine
Steron-T eye drop is a combination medicine containing a corticosteroid (Dexamethasone) and an aminoglycoside antibiotic (Tobramycin). It is used to treat inflammatory eye conditions where there is a risk of bacterial infection or an existing superficial bacterial infection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) every 4-6 hours. During the initial 24 to 48 hours, the dosage may be increased to 1-2 drops every 2 hours. The frequency should be gradually decreased as improvement occurs.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required for renal impairment as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Shake well before use. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch, and drop the medicine into the pouch. Close your eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.
Mechanism of Action
Dexamethasone, a potent corticosteroid, acts by inhibiting inflammatory responses. Tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by irreversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to bacterial cell death. The combination provides both anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes to hours for symptomatic relief of inflammation and initial antibacterial action.
Excretion
Mainly local action; any systemically absorbed components are excreted via kidneys.
Half life
Not significant systemically for topical ophthalmic use. Local half-life varies.
Absorption
Limited systemic absorption when administered topically to the eye. Primarily acts locally.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism for ophthalmic application. Dexamethasone is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Dexamethasone, Tobramycin, or any component of the formulation.
- Epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia, varicella, and many other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva.
- Mycobacterial infection of the eye.
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures.
- Uncomplicated purulent ocular infections (not requiring steroid use).
Drug Interactions
Topical NSAIDs
Concurrent use may increase the potential for corneal healing problems.
Other topical aminoglycosides
May increase risk of local toxicity or hypersensitivity reactions.
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If using multiple eye drops, administer them at least 5-10 minutes apart.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration due to limited systemic absorption. In case of excessive local exposure, rinse the eye with lukewarm water. Systemic overdose effects would be related to Dexamethasone (e.g., Cushing's syndrome with prolonged use) or Tobramycin (e.g., ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity) but are extremely rare with ophthalmic drops.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether topical ophthalmic administration can result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in human milk. Exercise caution when administering to a nursing mother. Consult your doctor.

Clinical Trials
Numerous clinical trials have established the efficacy and safety of ophthalmic combinations of Dexamethasone and Tobramycin for various ocular inflammatory and infectious conditions. Studies typically focus on reducing inflammation and eradicating bacterial pathogens.
Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP) is advisable for patients receiving prolonged (e.g., >10 days) corticosteroid ophthalmic therapy.
Doctor Notes
- Monitor intraocular pressure, especially in patients on prolonged therapy (more than 10 days).
- Prescribe for the shortest duration necessary to control symptoms and eradicate infection.
- Advise patients not to touch the dropper tip to any surface to maintain sterility.
- Not indicated for viral or fungal eye infections.
Patient Guidelines
- Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the eye drops.
- Do not wear contact lenses during treatment with this eye drop unless advised by your doctor. If you must wear them, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
- Do not use the same bottle for more than one person.
- Do not discontinue treatment abruptly, especially after prolonged use; follow your doctor's instructions for tapering off.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
