Description
Overview of the medicine
Stogut is a probiotic preparation containing Saccharomyces boulardii, a non-pathogenic yeast. It is used to restore the natural balance of gut flora, effectively treating and preventing various types of diarrhea including antibiotic-associated diarrhea, traveler's diarrhea, and acute infectious diarrhea.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 capsules (250-500 mg) once or twice daily, or as directed by physician. For AAD, continue for 4 weeks after antibiotic cessation. For H. pylori, during antibiotic therapy.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary.
How to Take
Capsules can be swallowed whole with water. For children or patients with difficulty swallowing, the contents of the capsule can be mixed with a small amount of water, juice, or food (not hot). Do not mix with very hot or alcoholic beverages.
Mechanism of Action
Saccharomyces boulardii exerts its action through multiple mechanisms: it binds to pathogens, inhibiting their adhesion and growth; neutralizes bacterial toxins; modulates the immune system; and maintains the integrity of the intestinal barrier. It also produces polyamines that stimulate brush border enzyme activity and nutrient absorption.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects typically observed within 1-2 days for diarrhea management.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in feces within 2-5 days after discontinuation.
Half life
Not applicable as it's not absorbed systemically; however, it remains viable in the gut for several days after administration.
Absorption
Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-colonizing yeast, meaning it does not get absorbed into the bloodstream. It remains viable in the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not applicable as it's a live organism and not metabolized by human enzymes.
